Date: 24 July 2021  Time: 11am-12:30pm Venue: Online via Zoom Webinar/ CPD2.42, Centennial Campus, HKU Registration: required for both face-to-face and online options, free Our Visiting Assistant Professor Dr. Kathleen Wyma, shared her expert insights on “Biennales” with audience both in person and online on July 24, 2021. Dr. Wyma’s thought-provoking talk stimulated interesting discussions, exchange of ideas, and raised questions like whether the art world is becoming more spectacularized for consumption, or the world flattening to a more globalized connectedness. In looking at exhibitions precedents that dated to the nineteenth century, Dr Wyma helped us understand the ‘why’ including the contexts for contemporary art. She also shared her personal experience with the Kochi Biennale in India as an example of the biennales of the periphery. The event was co-organised by HKUFAAA and the University’s Department of Art History, and supported by the HKU Museum Society. Feedback "I enjoyed the talk this morning very much. It was very informative and thought provoking." "The talk is really enjoyable and informative, it would be great to have one or two more talks by Dr. Wyma on similar subjects to make it into a contemporary art talk series, would like to learn more." "I’ve actually been waiting for Dr Wyma to open her Biennale course for a long time - I think the last time she opened I was still in Year 1 - so I was really excited for this talk " "Kathleen is a very passionate speaker and educator. There’s so much to learn!" "The talk was very insightful… looking forward to more talks and events from the Alumni Association!"

Date: 17 July 2021 Time: 14:30-16:00 Venue: Hong Kong Open Printshop, JCCAC Registration: required, $100 (member), $200 (non-member) Inspired by the two exhibitions at Hong Kong Heritage Museum, “20/20 Hong Kong Print Art Exhibition” and "Between the Lines – The Legends of Hong Kong Printing" (open until 26 July 2021), HKUFAAA organized a practical session for our members and friends at Hong Kong Open Printshop. It aimed to let participants experience letterpress and printmaking with HKOP artist and Programme Manager, Wong Lok-wan Loraine. In a studio setting, participants were introduced to various printing tools and techniques. After the demonstration, all participants took turn to print a postcard home!     Feedback "Thanks for the workshop! Had a great time there :)" "We enjoyed it very much! Thanks a lot for your coordination."

Date: 12 July 2021 Time: 4pm-5:30pm Venue: JC Contemporary, Tai Kwun Registration required, free Jill Chun, assistant curator of "Ink City", and Michelle Wong, guest curator of "Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys," kindly offered us their time to talk to our members and friends on their current exhibitions at Tai Kwun, when the galleries were closed to the public. "Ink City" was a visual feast, showcasing a wide range of art works that challenge the medium ink or the idea of ink art. Next door, "Portals, Stories, and Other Journeys" literally functioned like a portal to the fascinating world of AAA’s Ha Bik Chuen Archive. Years of archival and curatorial hard work was shown through. Audience got to see how local artists approached and responded to the archive, and by engaging with these archival materials and art works in various ways, participants got to experience and complete the project themselves.   Feedback "The exhibition tour provides a precious opportunity to talk to the curators. It is inspiring to listen to the curatorial stories and challenges behind two very different exhibitions: Ink City and Ha Bik Chuen Archive. It is also a good chance to connect with other Art History Alumni. Thanks HKUFAAA for the wonderful arrangement!"

Date: 3 July 2021 Time: 10:30am-12noon Venue: Online (zoom) Registration: required, free Host: Ms. Nicole Fung and Mr. Mike Wong   Alumni speakers: Dr. Chan Chunwa (Assistant Professor, Department of Art History, HKU) Ms. Madeline Lai (Project Coordinator, Art Museum CUHK) Ms. Carman Lau (MAAH Administrator, Department of Art History, HKU) Ms. Erin Li (Assistant Curator, Tai Kwun) Ms. Angel Yip (Assistant Curator II Chinese Antiquities, Hong Kong Museum of Art) Graduation is exciting but it may also be daunting. We understand the possible difficulties in getting the very first job in the art field, because we have been through it. Young alumni were invited to share with current and graduating Fine Arts students their unique career path. It was fascinating to listen to all their "complicated stories" as each had explored many different parts of the industry (eg. commercial, non-profit, archival, curatorial, educational, people-based, programme-based, object-based etc). Volunteering, internships, and part-time jobs might not come with fancy titles or promising contract terms at first, but to our speakers, these experiences opened one door after another, and enabled them to figure out who they wanted to be, and eventually added up to make them who they are now. Feedback "All the speakers were packed with information. I especially appreciated the detailed sharings about their daily tasks and their thought processes behind changing from one job to another. Thanks again for organizing this." "Thank you for holding the session today! It was nice to see so many people in the industry sharing their experiences
