Museum Visit: Surrealism and Beyond

Date: 25 June 2021
Time: 10am-11:15am

Venue: Hong Kong Museum of Art (live on zoom)

Registration: required, free

To kick off our series of summer events, HKUFAAA is delighted to have invited Dr Kathleen Wyma to conduct an audio guided tour at HKMOA. This exhibition “Mythologies: Surrealism and Beyond — Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou” showcases surrealist artworks and archival materials from the Pompidou collection. It was her aim to provide participants with a context, and information on the discourse of Surrealism, to help one get a deeper understanding of various issues at stake during that first half of the 20th century. She brought up ideas of the exquisite corpse and the uncanny, chance and automatism, fascism and colonialism. These are some underlying and connecting themes that inspire one to look more carefully at the exhibits. Participants were all encouraged to critically analyse both the works and the museum display, in order to arrive at more meaningful interpretations beyond perhaps what our first impression might tell.

Feedback

“The best way to experience an exhibition is with Dr Wyma! Great insight and very different critical perspectives from what an official museum guide would offer.”

“Thank you so much for giving me the chance to join… I enjoyed every second of the tour this morning.”
