Overview
- Explore how art traditions evolved with elements of Zen Buddhism and Chinese aesthetics during the Muromachi period, and how these changes were evident in ink painting, garden design, tea culture and other art production at the time.
- Understand the social and political contexts of the Muromachi period, and the relationship among shogunate, Zen and art.
- Examine the Ashikaga art collections, the role of Dōbōshū, and Ami School
- Use Sesshū Tōyō as an example to learn how ink paintings demonstrate Sino-Japanese cultural exchange.

Instructor: Dr. Yuk Lan Ng is an art historian whose primary research focuses on Chinese and Japanese art, folk art, and cultural exchange. She has teaching experience in the University of Hong Kong, Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Baptist University, along with extensive research in Japan supported by the Japan Foundation.
